#WeekendWisdom 048 Accessing Business Websites
Welcome to #WeekendWisdom number 48. This week we’re going to talk about accessing business websites.
How can you have a problem accessing business websites?
A friend of mine came to me recently with a problem. He was trying to get access to his website so that he could make some changes to it. But he couldn’t get in contact with the website developer that he originally used and who was supposedly maintaining the site for him.
It turns out that website developer had gone out of business as result of COVID-19. Now using some contacts we were able to find an alternative means of getting in touch with that developer and my friend got sorted out.
What does a business owner need for their website?
What’s really needed from your website developer? What should they get from them, when you have a website?
You should absolutely get an administrative logon to your Contact Management System (CMS) on which your website is built. So that’s like maybe WordPress or Drupal. So one of those, you get a logon for the website so you can gain access to it at any time should the web developer not be available.
Is that everything?
No. You should also get access to the backend of the website. Where the website is hosted so that if you want to move your website from that website developer to maybe somebody else, in case they’re going out of business or whatever, you have that ability. Now that can maybe be a bit tricky but try and get that if you can.
Surely that’s all?
One last thing. They should also provide you with full settings and details you might need to be able to setup email on various devices that you may own.
So that’s it for this week. Let’s be careful out there and we’ll talk to you again next week.
